Eating Disorder Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) for Adults

The Adult IOP is our 16 week commitment to you and your recovery. It is specifically designed to support you in two main areas that contribute to successful recovery. First, to address the eating disorder by reducing symptoms and increasing the quality of daily life. And second, to support the cultivation of personal meaning, fulfillment and purpose, which allows true recovery to be maintained.

Treatment programs vary in intensity from two to four days per week, involve customized combinations of therapy (individual, group, couple, and/or family), and pair modalities used with client learning style (more concrete learning styles with DBT and EMDR, more abstract learning styles with expressive arts and movement/somatic therapies). A typical day of IOP lasts 3-4 hours.

Essential program elements include:

  • Dialectical Behavioral Therapy: Mindfulness Coaching and Skill Building
  • Expressive Arts and Movement Therapies
  • Somatic Therapy and Body Image Restoration
  • Nutrition Therapy
  • Experiential Therapies and Process Groups
  • EMDR and Neurofeedback
  • Yoga and Meditation
  • Adjunct psychiatric services and medical evaluations

The IOP is appropriate for clients stepping down from a higher level of care, such as a hospital or residential treatment center, or for clients increasing care by adding to individual sessions with a therapist or dietitian. When clients are already seeing a therapist or dietitian, we encourage integrating care with these treatment professionals rather than suspending these relationships when entering IOP. This usually prevents unnecessary gaps in treatment and supports clients re-integrating into their community once IOP ends.

“Taking the program at the EDCSD has been the most rewarding part of my recovery process. Not only have they led me on a path of discovering myself, they have provided an environment in which I at last feel valuable, even lovable. I learned that I don’t have to fear my feelings because it is only with them that I truly heal. Because of their commitment to me and my recovery, I have found hope and healing in the midst of an eating disorder.”
