Eating Disorder Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) for Adults

The Adult IOP offers eating disorder help in San Diego. The Adult IOP is specifically designed to support you in two main areas that contribute to successful eating disorder help in Sand Diego. First, to address the eating disorder by reducing symptoms and increasing the quality of daily life. And second, to support the cultivation of personal meaning, fulfillment and purpose, which allows true recovery to be maintained. We recommend 16 weeks in IOP in order to build the behavioral, mental and emotional foundation needed for lasting recovery.

Treatment programs vary in intensity from two to five days per week, involve customized combinations of therapy (individual, group, couple, and/or family), and pair modalities used with client learning style (more concrete learning styles with DBT and EMDR, more abstract learning styles with expressive arts and movement/somatic therapies). A typical day of IOP lasts 3-4 hours.

Essential program elements include:

  • Individual Therapy
  • Family Therapy
  • Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT): Mindfulness Coaching
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): Skill Building
  • Nutrition Therapy
  • Expressive Arts and Movement Therapies
  • Mindful Meals
  • Process Groups
  • Trauma Focused CBT (as needed)
  • Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) (as needed)
  • Adjunct individual therapies as recommended
  • Adjunct psychiatric services and medical evaluations

The IOP is appropriate for clients stepping down from a higher level of care, such as a hospital or residential treatment center, or for clients increasing care by adding to individual sessions with a therapist or dietitian. When clients are already seeing a therapist or dietitian, we encourage integrating care with these treatment professionals rather than suspending these relationships when entering IOP. This usually prevents unnecessary gaps in treatment and supports clients re-integrating into their community once IOP ends.
