Adult Group Services

Looking for group therapy or eating disorder help in San Diego? These group therapies are designed to support clients on two levels of recovery. First, to develop growing mastery in reducing eating disordered and associated thoughts and behaviors; and second, to build lives clients love to live based on authentic self-connection. Groups are included at all levels of programs at EDCSD and are recommended based on the unique needs of each client.

ADULT INTESIVE OUTPATIENT PROGRAM (IOP) Core Groups
ANAD Support Group
Be surrounded by women of all ages and backgrounds who deeply understand what you are going through on the journey to recovery because they have been there and are going through it too. Led by a healing practitioner who has triumphed over her own battle with bulimia, this weekly ANAD group is designed to be inspiring, hopeful, and helpful.
Dialectical Behavioral Therapy Groups – DBT
DBT strongly improves awareness and power to manage difficult feelings and distress. In a fun and experiential manner, healthy communication skills are also learned to navigate personal and professional relationships with more assertiveness and ease.
Embodyment (Body Image) Group
Through supportive, experiential activities, clients learn to reconnect to the inner wisdom of their bodies, exploring and creating a new definition of body-image, confidence, and femininity.
Expressive Arts Group
Through different forms of art, participants are encouraged to express their inner world. We focus on getting the inside out through art, not creating a final product. Healing and self-discovery are the results of expressive introspection. Clients are empowered by renewed strength and perspectives.
Focused Power Groups – Infused CBT
For many, decision making and goal setting feels quite difficult. Here, we teach practical, empowering methods to move effectively toward your goals, which is a learned skill developed over time, not a lack of willpower.
Mindful Meal Groups
Based on Geneen Roth’s work, we eat together mindfully first, then process fears and concerns about food. We pay particular attention to body sensations as well as cultivate techniques that allow food to be experienced as nutrition and energy. This group finishes with clients identifying one challenge area to work on.
Therapeutic Process Groups
Here, we cultivate a safe environment in which we stop talking about therapy and actually do it! Through experiential techniques, clients are invited to share struggles, ask questions and express feelings. Clients find themselves building self-acceptance and self-confidence to take out into the world.
ADULT IOP ELECTIVES and RECOVERY MAINTENANCE
Creative Path
Based on The Artist Way by Julia Cameron, then infused with experiential art therapy, clients are invited to consider rules, roles and expectations that keep their eating disorder intact. We aim to spark their creative spirit and intuition, ultimately discovering and re-creating a more authentic identity for fulfilled living.
Dialectical Behavioral Therapy – DBT
DBT strongly improves awareness and power to manage difficult feelings and distress. In a fun and experiential manner, healthy communication skills are also learned to navigate personal and professional relationships with more assertiveness and ease.
Emotional Fullness Group
For many, food and eating are no longer about nourishment, energy or experiencing life. Rather, overeating and binge eating are used to deal with stress, emptiness, life difficulties and low self-esteem. Here, we deal with these issues directly, learning skills and gaining support instead of going to food or self-recrimination.
Relapse Prevention – Infused CBT for Eating Disorders
This group focuses on skills and education relevant to life in recovery from eating disorders. This often includes transcending eating disorder behaviors, strengthening relationships, building trust, understanding emotions, and easing perfectionism. It has a strong relapse prevention focus that balances the impact of eating disorder behaviors and thoughts on daily living while moving forward and away from the eating disorder as a focus.
Eating Disorders AND Chemical Dependency Support Group
Participants will explore and create practices in main areas of recovery: strengthening relationships, practicing healthy thinking and self talk, making helpful behavioral choices, and creating daily strategies for grounding and balance in recovery. Group members will be encouraged to attend a 12-step fellowship, obtain sponsorship, and work the steps with the collective support of the group.
Sacred Circle Process and Psychodrama Groups
Here, we cultivate a safe environment in which we stop talking about therapy and actually do it! Through experiential techniques, clients are invited to share struggles, ask questions and express feelings. Clients find themselves building self-acceptance and self-confidence to take out into the world.
S.A.F.E. Trauma & Abuse Survivors Group
With emphasis on body safety and self-protection, clients learn to reclaim their power and confidence after abuse. This is a place to tell one’s story to others who understand. It’s a community fueled by support, acceptance, companionship, understanding and moving forward.

ADULT EATING AND WELLNESS THERAPY PROGRAM
Supportive Process Group
For many, food and eating is no longer about nourishment and life but rather about dealing with stress and emptiness. Here, we deal with these issues directly by creating understanding and options versus further self-judgment.
Cognitive & Dialectical Therapy Group – CBT/DBT
CBT and DBT are leading therapeutic approaches that provide real solutions for tolerating relational distress, managing eating urges and impulses, regulating emotions, and improving self-connection. Though integrating these tools and concepts, you will be more able to move life in the direction you choose.
Exercise with Friends
For many, exercise has become drudgery, with the rigid focus of losing weight and burning calories. In this class, we make exercise fun again, redefining exercise as learning to move and enjoy your body with focus, control and confidence. Bring a friend or family member for free!
